Strasbourg - a city with flair

The centre is best discovered on foot, with a boat tour,on the mini-train or on the modern trams with their panorama windows which offer a view of everything going on. Alongside New York and Geneva, Strasbourg is the only other city where international institutions have their headquarters, without it being the capital. There are 71 embassies and consulates in Strasbourg today.

Major tourist attractions:

  • The entire historic centre (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • The magnificent panoramic view of the town and the cathedral from the Barrage Vauban terrace, which was started in 1686 Strasbourg Cathedral, completed in 1439, one of the most beautiful buildings of the Gothic era. At 142 m, it’s tower was the highest of any church in the world until the 19th century (today, only the towers of Ulm Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral and Rouen Cathedral are higher).
  • Opposite the cathedral is the Kammerzell House (restaurant) with it’s 16th-century timber framing, as well as the “pharmacie du Cerf” chemist’s which was built in 1268.Straßburger Münster, eines der schönsten Bauwerke der Gotik.

The world’s biggest cuckoo clock – street of a thousand clocks

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the world’s biggest cuckoo clock can be found on the Straße von Triberg, going in the direction of Hornberg. It has an overall height of 15.3 m and can be viewed from both inside and outside. The clock is a replica of a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock on a scale of 60:1. The individual elements of the clock are accordingly large and heavy: the internal mechanism measures 4.5x4.5 m and weighs six tonnes, the pendulum is eight metres long and weighs 100 kg and the cuckoo itself is a proud 150 kg.
